Hellcat-backed Durango seems to have become a certainty, especially after Dodge teased its presence in ads earlier this year. A very powerful SUV is now on the horizon and is scheduled for a year of production as a 2022 model. While the company pulled a similar move to the highly hyped and limited-edition Challenger SRT Demon, we hope strong sales and fan interest will prolong Durango’s wicked life.

Designed with three rows of seats and 710 horsepower, the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat 2022 is a rollercoaster that the whole family can enjoy — or be terrified of. As the name suggests, there’s a V-8 engine hidden in intimidating bodywork, and its standard all-wheel-drive system is just too eager to help its amazing acceleration.
The howl of the supercharger and the roar of its exhaust can switch from background music to hearing attacks on the pedal press. And when Dodge’s tallest SUV doesn’t make its passengers squirm and regret their lunch, it can pull up to 8700 pounds and transport a lot of groceries. The Durango SRT Hellcat 2022 may seem like an overspending and expensive mid-size SUV, but not for those who appreciate its outrageousness.

With a top speed of up to 180 mph, the power of the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat is one of the best in octane-powered SUVs. Basically, it’s amazingly fast.
Dodge Durango finally comes equipped with a Supercharged 6.2L HEMI SRT Hellcat V8 engine. We put 710 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque under the hood because sending shivers through veins is our specialty.
Traction plays a big role at 60 mph, and Durango’s all-wheel-drive system helps maximize it. That’s how the 5,534-pound SUV accelerates to 60 just a tenth of a second slower than the 797 hp Hellcat Redeye SRT Charger and two-tenths behind the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 760 hp.
SRT Hellcat Chassis
Speaking of traction, Dodge tuned the chassis to keep the engine power up. Hellcat Durangos benefited from a reworked suspension that mainly reduced body roll compared to the ’20 SRT model. Durango bends to the corners and rings around the clover with ease — think of Derrick Henry in a yoga class. On the skidpad, dodge recorded a 0.87 g lateral grip with Pirelli P Zero summer tires for $595.
As if a whining blower wasn’t enough to warn other drivers that this SUV isn’t a Durango SRT 392 475-hp, Dodge put a lot of Hellcat badges to the exterior. From the driver’s seat, the whining supercharger looks but is smoother than in the Challenger and Charger.
Hellcat shares an instrument panel and a 10.1-inch touchscreen with the rest of the Durango ’21 lineup. To aid the justification that you paid nearly three times the price of the base model for Hellcat power, the cabin got a flat-bottom steering wheel.

Inside, hellcat Durango has a driver-centered layout that looks similar to the dashboard in dodge chargers and challengers. This cluster of super SUV gauges features exclusive red accents, and the flat steering wheel underneath holds a pair of paddle shifters and an SRT logo that has a red backlight.
The Hellcat model also comes standard with heated, ventilated seats and Nappa leather upholstery, which includes microsuede inserts on the front cushion. The cabin design is enhanced with Laguna leather in a red and black and Demonic color scheme with an embossed Hellcat logo.
The center console contains a pair of cupholders, a prominent T-handle shifter, capacitive storage, and space for a wireless charging pad. Dodge said Durango’s interior “felt broader” in previous model years, but we didn’t expect its cargo or passenger space to actually have different measurements.
The models we have previously evaluated all have comfortable accommodations and a folding third row. They held an impressive number of carry-on suitcases in our tests as well, with the ability to swallow four bags behind the back row and up to 26 with the second and third rows saved.
Its infotainment system runs through a large 10.1-inch touchscreen that supports the company’s latest Uconnect 5 software, which it says is five times faster than the version it replaced. The interface is primarily manipulated via touch input, but there is also a rotary volume and tuning knob built into the climate control panel below.
The addition of Amazon Alexa functionality allows extended voice commands, and the system also allows two Bluetooth devices to connect simultaneously. Other popular features include apple carplay wireless and Android Auto as well as subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspots. Durango can also be equipped with a rear entertainment system featuring a pair of 9.0-inch screens mounted on the back of the front seat.
There’s a machine monster hiding under the hood and venting. It’s a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 that calls for 710 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque. The earth’s power is directed to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Hellcat machine exhales through an improved exhaust system that must amplify its thunder and mix with the apparent whining of its massive supercharger.
While we haven’t had a chance to test the powerful Durango yet, Dodge claims it can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and complete a quarter of a mile in an NHRA-certified pass time of 11.5 seconds. Plus, it’s capable of towing 8,700 pounds, which is more than any other mid-size crossover SUV.
It rides on a specially tuned suspension with adaptive dampers and 20-inch-by-10-inch wheels with standard Pirelli Scorpion Zero season-long tires or optional Pirelli P Zero three-season tires. Durango’s top dogs also use a powerful Brembo brake system that clamps the front rotor 15.75 inches with a six-piston caliper and a 13.8-inch rear disc with a four-piston fastener.

Neither Dodge nor EPA has released fuel economy ratings for the Durango SRT Hellcat 2022. However, we estimate the number is even less than the 485-hp SRT 392, which received an estimated 13 mpg of the city and 19 highways from the government last year.
If the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk 707 hp is any indication, fire-breathing Durango could see EPA ratings as low or lower than 11 mph and 17 highways. Once the official figures are released, and we have the opportunity to test them on our 200-mile highway route, we can evaluate the real world.
2022 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat Price
Priced at $89,665 as tested, this Durango is a relative bargain compared to super-SUVs from Mercedes-AMG and BMW M and about the same price as the Jeep 707-hp Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.
But none of them would look as good towing Challenger SRT Demon to the drag strip as Durango’s, which can carry £8,700. Once you get to the strip, you might even run some trajectories in it as well. Remember to remove the trailer hook and check the back seat for children first.
